Panic Attacks When Presenting: Why They Happen and Where the Root Is

If panic hits when you present and nowhere else, the trigger is not your confidence. It is an alarm that learned the room is dangerous.

Panic attacks when presenting happen because your amygdala, the alarm in your brain, has filed the presentation in the same category as a physical danger. When it fires, it floods you with adrenaline and shuts down your thinking brain, so the heart pounds, the voice shakes, and the mind goes white. It is a learned false alarm, and it has to be addressed at the root, not calmed.

Panic that only shows up at the podium

Many people have panic attacks only when they have to present, speak up, or be evaluated by a room. Everywhere else in life they are steady, capable, even calm under pressure. That pattern is the clue. The alarm is not broken in general. It has learned one specific trigger.

How one bad moment teaches the alarm

For most people there is a first time: a boardroom that held more people than expected, a freeze in front of a boss, a voice that cracked. The alarm records it as proof that the room is dangerous. After that, it fires earlier and harder, and the dread arrives days or weeks ahead. Dread is being anxious that you will be anxious.

Why the usual advice does not work

Breathing, calming and deep-breathing techniques, positive thinking, more rehearsal, and presentation skills all go after the symptoms. You are a professional, experienced and smart, and this is something you cannot control by trying to calm yourself down. Trying to control the wave can stir the alarm up more, and logic does not work on a phobia. In my experience, none of it removes the fear.

Where the root is

The root is the amygdala having public speaking in its database. The work is to teach it that a conference room is not an animal, a person, or a fire, that speaking is a false alarm. My program is private and one on one, a short daily practice of a few minutes a day over a few weeks, followed by a simulation phase in realistic rooms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I have panic attacks only when I present?

The alarm in your brain, the amygdala, has learned one specific trigger. It treats the presentation like a physical danger and floods you with adrenaline while shutting down the thinking brain.

Where is the root of presentation panic?
