Nausea and Dread Before a Speech: Why It Happens and Where the Root Is
The knot in your stomach before you speak is your alarm getting your body ready for a danger that is only a room.
GET YOUR FEAR SCORE NOW
Nausea and dread before a speech or presentation come from your amygdala, the alarm in your brain, preparing your body for a physical danger. It redirects blood and attention away from digestion and floods you with adrenaline, which is why your stomach turns. The dread is being anxious that you will be anxious. Both are the alarm, not a weakness.

What it feels like in the hours before
A churning stomach, no appetite, a dry mouth, a sense of heaviness that sits on the whole day. Some people feel it the morning of. Others feel it for a week. You may find yourself checking the clock, rehearsing again, or hoping something cancels the event.
Why the body reacts before you even speak
Your thinking brain, the prefrontal cortex, is where you live almost all of the day. Deep in the brain, the amygdala exists to protect you from real danger and sends a wave through the whole body to get you ready to fight or run. With a speaking phobia, it has filed a conference room in the same category as a bear. That is a metaphor, not a medical claim. The body does not know it is only a meeting.
Why the usual advice does not work
Breathing, calming and deep-breathing techniques, positive thinking, more rehearsal, and presentation tips all go after the symptoms. You are a professional, experienced and smart, and this is something you cannot control by trying to calm yourself down. Trying to settle the wave can stir the alarm up more, and logic does not work on a phobia. In my experience, none of it removes the fear.
Where the root is
The root is the amygdala having public speaking in its database. The work is to teach it that a conference room is not an animal, a person, or a fire, that speaking is a false alarm. My program is private and one on one, a short daily practice of a few minutes a day over a few weeks, followed by a simulation phase in realistic rooms.
