Mind Goes Blank While Speaking: What Is Happening and Where the Root Is

You knew the material. Then it was gone. That is not a memory problem. It is the thinking brain being shut down.

When your mind goes blank while speaking, your amygdala, the alarm in your brain, has taken control and shut down your thinking brain, the prefrontal cortex. That is an amygdala hijack, and it is why you can lose your place, your words, or your entire point in the middle of a sentence. It has nothing to do with intelligence or preparation.

What a blank feels like

A sudden white page where your next sentence was. The room gets very quiet. You hear your own heartbeat. You may repeat yourself, trail off, or look down at your notes and find that the words on the page do not connect to anything. Many people replay that moment for years.

Why it happens: the hijack

Your thinking brain is where you live almost all of the day, working, talking, having dinner with friends. Deep in the brain, the amygdala exists to keep you alive, and it sits above the thinking brain in the hierarchy. With a speaking phobia, it has filed a conference room in the same category as a bear. That is a metaphor, not a medical claim. When it fires, the thinking brain goes offline for the moment, and the language and memory you were using go with it.

Why the usual advice does not work

Memorizing more, writing a tighter script, pausing to collect yourself, and breathing, calming and deep-breathing techniques all go after the symptoms. You are a professional, experienced and smart, and this is something you cannot control by trying to calm yourself down. Logic does not work on a phobia: the more you know the material, the more the blank feels inexplicable. In my experience, none of it removes the fear.

Where the root is

The root is the amygdala having public speaking in its database. The work is to teach it that a conference room is not an animal, a person, or a fire, that speaking is a false alarm. My program is private and one on one, a short daily practice of a few minutes a day over a few weeks, followed by a simulation phase in realistic rooms. When the alarm stays quiet, the thinking brain stays on.

Why Robert Summa

Robert lived with public speaking fear for about 18 years, beginning with a panic attack at 25 in a New York boardroom, and knows what brain freeze costs a capable person. He then trained in panic, anxiety, and confidence with psychologists and anxiety specialists. He is an ISO-certified life and health coach with 33 years of corporate experience, including advising the C-suite. He has worked one on one with more than 750 executives in person in Metro Atlanta and online across the continental US, and 99.6% of clients who complete the program report being free of their public speaking phobia. Results vary by individual. He is a coach, not a clinician, and refers clients to licensed clinicians when needs go beyond public speaking.
