Social Anxiety vs Fear of Public Speaking: What Is Different and Where the Root Is

Comfortable at dinner, terrified at the podium? That pattern points to a fear that is about speaking, not about people.

Many people who dread presentations are perfectly at ease at dinner parties, in one-on-one conversations, and with new colleagues. That points to a fear that is specific to speaking in front of a group, not to people in general. Whatever the label, the mechanism people describe is the same: the amygdala, the alarm in your brain, fires a full response to the room.

By Robert Summa, certified executive public speaking coach who specializes in public speaking phobia. This page is educational and is not medical advice. I do not diagnose.

Two different patterns people describe

Some people feel uneasy in many social situations: meeting strangers, making small talk, being watched while eating. Others are fine in all of those and fall apart only when they have to present, speak up in a meeting, or give a toast. The second group often says, I am not shy, I am not socially anxious, I just cannot present. That distinction matters because it tells you where the alarm is aimed.

Why speaking is its own trigger

Your thinking brain, the prefrontal cortex, is where you live almost all of the day. Deep in the brain, the amygdala exists to protect you from real danger. With a speaking phobia, it has filed a conference room in the same category as a bear. That is a metaphor, not a medical claim. The room, the silence, and every face pointed at you is the trigger, not people themselves.

Why the usual advice does not work

Breathing, calming and deep-breathing techniques, positive thinking, networking practice, and presentation skills all go after the symptoms. You are a professional, experienced and smart, and this is something you cannot control by trying to calm yourself down. Logic does not work on a phobia. In my experience, none of it removes the fear.

Where the root is

The root is the amygdala having public speaking in its database. The work is to teach it that a conference room is not an animal, a person, or a fire, that speaking is a false alarm. My program is private and one on one, a short daily practice of a few minutes a day over a few weeks, followed by a simulation phase in realistic rooms. My work is about public speaking. I am a coach, not a clinician, and I refer clients to licensed clinicians when needs go beyond public speaking.
