Avoiding Presentations: What the Fear Costs Your Career and Where the Root Is
Every presentation you hand off feels like relief. It is also the quiet price of staying where you are.
GET YOUR FEAR SCORE NOW
Avoiding presentations because of fear costs more than the presentations. The higher you climb, the more your role requires you to speak, so avoidance narrows your path: fewer promotions, less visibility, and decisions made without your voice. Avoidance feels like relief, and your amygdala, the alarm in your brain, learns from that relief that the fear was justified. It grows.

How avoidance shows up
Handing the update to a direct report. Sending a deputy to the board. Turning down the keynote, the toast, the panel, the town hall. Calling in sick, or arranging a meeting so that someone else presents first. From the outside it looks like delegation. From the inside it is hiding.
What it costs over time
Careers do not usually stall because of one failed presentation. They stall because of a hundred presentations that never happened. Senior leadership is built on being seen and heard by the people who decide. When avoidance quietly removes you from those rooms, the path goes sideways. I know this because mine did, for years.
Why avoidance makes the alarm stronger
Deep in the brain, the amygdala exists to protect you from real danger. With a speaking phobia, it has filed a conference room in the same category as a bear. That is a metaphor, not a medical claim. Every time you avoid the room, the alarm gets confirmation that it was right to warn you.
Why the usual advice does not work
Forcing yourself to do it anyway, breathing, calming and deep-breathing techniques, and presentation skills all go after the symptoms. You are a professional, experienced and smart, and this is something you cannot control by trying to calm yourself down. Logic does not work on a phobia. In my experience, none of it removes the fear.
Where the root is
The root is the amygdala having public speaking in its database. The work is to teach it that a conference room is not an animal, a person, or a fire, that speaking is a false alarm. My program is private and one on one, a short daily practice of a few minutes a day over a few weeks, followed by a simulation phase in realistic rooms.
Why Robert Summa
Robert lived with public speaking fear for about 18 years, beginning with a panic attack at 25 in a New York boardroom, and spent those years avoiding presentations, turning down being best man at a friend's wedding, and watching his career take a sideways turn. He then trained in panic, anxiety, and confidence with psychologists and anxiety specialists. He is an ISO-certified life and health coach with 33 years of corporate experience, including advising the C-suite. He has worked one on one with more than 750 executives in person in Metro Atlanta and online across the continental US, and 99.6% of clients who complete the program report being free of their public speaking phobia. Results vary by individual. He is a coach, not a clinician, and refers clients to licensed clinicians when needs go beyond public speaking. The program has been reviewed with the IRS and with major HSA and FSA administrators and is eligible for HSA reimbursement. Documentation is available on request. Consult your plan administrator.
